Diplomate in Special Care Dentistry


Purpose

Special Care Dentistry has formed the American Board of Special Care Dentistry (ABSCD) to grant the credential of Diplomate in Special Care Dentistry. The purpose of this credential is to recognize outstanding individuals in the field of special care dentistry. The purpose of “Grandfathering” Diplomates is to recognize and develop a cadre of skilled individuals in the areas of special care dentistry to further the purposes of the ABSCD.

Eligibility

Eligibility for being granted the credential of Diplomate in Special Care Dentistry during the next two years is:

  1. SCD members who have attained Fellowship status in two or three of the SCD component groups will be granted the credential of Diplomate in Special Care Dentistry. They will be required to apply for Diplomate status prior to the end of the Grandfathering period. provide the appropriate documents and remit the appropriate fees.
  2. The credential of Diplomate in Special Care Dentistry may also be granted to SCD members who have attained fellowship status in one of the SCD component groups. They must provide documentation of continuous service in the field of special care dentistry for 5 years. They must also agree to serve the organization in a defined manner in order to further the aims of the ABSCD. They will be required to apply for Diplomate status prior to the end of the Grandfathering period. provide the appropriate documents and remit the appropriate fees.
  3. The credential of Diplomate in Special Care Dentistry may be granted to SCD members who have attained fellowship status in one or more of the SCD component groups but allowed their membership to lapse for no more than 2 years. They will be permitted to rejoin SCD via the component group(s) in which they obtained Fellowship(s) providing all past unpaid dues for those two years and the current membership cycle are brought current. They will also meet all additional requirements outlined above.
  4. All Grandfathered Diplomates must be willing, and if necessary at their own expense, to actively participate in the activities of their assigned duties to further the aims of the ABSCD for a minimum of 3 years to maintain their Diplomate status. Active participation must include the Diplomates presence in national meetings, committee meetings and other activities necessary for the advancement of the ABSCD.
